European countries are debating strict age restrictions on social media use to protect minors, and the discussion has now reached Germany.
According to Der Spiegel, the issue is being discussed within Germany’s ruling coalition. The move comes after other nations introduced restrictions. In December 2025, Australia became the first country in the world to ban children under 16 from using social media platforms such as TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook (Meta).
Turkey is also preparing similar measures. A parliamentary report has called for broad regulations, including age verification and stricter content filtering, placing Turkey among a growing number of countries seeking tighter controls on minors’ access to social media.
