Germany’s exports to the United States fell sharply last year, impacted by President Donald Trump’s tariff campaign that strained trade relations between the two countries.
Official data showed that Germany’s trade surplus with the U.S. dropped to its lowest level in four years. Overall, German exports to the American market declined by 9.3 percent year-on-year in 2025.
Meanwhile, trade with European countries increased slightly, helping total German exports grow by about 1 percent after two years of decline. This limited recovery only partially offset losses in shipments to the U.S. American imports from Germany rose modestly, further narrowing the bilateral trade surplus.
