Germany’s AI Leap: Telekom Opens Massive Data Center

Publication date: 2026-02-05

Deutsche Telekom has inaugurated one of Europe’s largest AI data centers in Munich. The “Industrial AI Cloud” project, powered by 10,000 Nvidia processors and €1 billion in investments, aims to reduce German companies’ reliance on international suppliers.

The new facility boosts Germany’s AI computing capacity by about 50 percent, marking a significant step toward digitizing industry and small to medium-sized enterprises.

Telekom CEO Timotheus Höttges stated: “Without artificial intelligence, we will lose our industry and Germany as a business hub.”

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz praised the plans by Telekom and Nvidia last June, calling them “an important step toward Germany’s digital sovereignty and economic future.” Telekom confirmed that all data will remain within Germany and be managed by European staff.

However, questions remain about true independence, as the hardware comes from U.S. chipmaker Nvidia, which itself relies on raw materials from China. Still, the Munich AI facility is seen as a milestone and could expand further if demand increases.
