Germany is expanding its Lithuania Brigade, reinforcing NATO’s eastern border. This marks the first German Army brigade permanently stationed abroad, playing a central role in securing the region.
In early February 2026, the number of troops will rise from 500 to 1,800 with the addition of combat battalions, and by 2027 the brigade is expected to reach 4,800 soldiers. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated: “We consider the Lithuania Brigade a decisive military contribution to deterrence and defense.”
The brigade combines German and multinational forces, serving as a guarantee for Lithuania’s security, given its strategic location between Russia and Belarus. Germany thus assumes a key role on NATO’s eastern flank, securing the area as a logistical hub for the alliance.
