Human Rights Watch warns of rising hostility toward migrants in Germany

Publication date: 2026-02-04

In its annual report, Human Rights Watch highlighted the worsening living conditions of migrants and their children in Germany. Presenting the report in Berlin, racism expert Almaz Tefera noted that the political rhetoric of the far-right AfD party has increasingly been adopted by democratic parties.

She stressed that labeling people with migration backgrounds as a “problem” is harmful, even if later clarified that “hard-working migrants” are not the ones being targeted.

The organization also painted one of the bleakest pictures in years of the global human rights situation. Executive Director Philippe Bolopion warned that the international human rights system is in serious danger.
