German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius inaugurated a new Bundeswehr innovation center in Erding near Munich, stressing the need for faster and more innovative armed forces capable of delivering military technology at a much quicker pace.
Pistorius stated that innovation is not a luxury for the German army but a key to success, pointing to drone technology that changes within weeks in the Ukraine war.
He described the new center as a first step on a new path, moving away from traditional procurement structures, and highlighted opportunities for cooperation with universities, companies, and start-ups in urban areas.
Artificial intelligence, he said, will play a decisive role in potential defense scenarios, reducing human casualties “if we send technology first.”
The minister emphasized the critical importance of armaments for Germany as an industrial power, noting that both the automotive industry and the defense industry will be decisive for economic success and Germany’s role in security and foreign policy over the next 15 years.
