German Chancellor: Iranian Regime’s Days Are Numbered

Publication date: 2026-01-28

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated on Wednesday that the Iranian regime’s days are “numbered,” voicing support for Italy’s call to designate Iran’s Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization.

Speaking at a press conference alongside Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan in Berlin, Merz said: “A regime that can only remain in power through sheer violence and terror against its own people has no future.”

He added: “It may be a matter of weeks, but this system has no legitimacy to govern.”

Merz also expressed strong backing for Italy’s efforts to push the European Union to classify the Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist group, lamenting that one or two EU states are still unwilling to support such a move.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani had urged the EU on Monday to take this step following the bloody crackdown on protests, announcing he would propose the idea “in coordination with other partners” at the EU foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels on Thursday.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump said a massive fleet led by the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln was heading toward Iran, noting it was larger than the one previously sent to Venezuela.
