Iraq urges countries to take back their ISIS nationals

Publication date: 2026-01-25

The Iraqi government has called on countries to repatriate their citizens who were formerly affiliated with ISIS and are currently detained.

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani stressed that the temporary transfer of ISIS detainees from Syria to Iraqi prisons is intended to safeguard Iraq’s national security and regional stability. He emphasized that nations must assume responsibility for their citizens.

This appeal comes as the international community continues to debate how to handle detained ISIS members. Several European countries remain reluctant to repatriate them, while Baghdad insists that international cooperation is essential to prevent future threats.
