US President Donald Trump on Saturday praised the role of British soldiers in Afghanistan, seeking to ease tensions following his earlier comments that had downplayed the contributions of allied forces.

Posting on his platform “Truth Social,” Trump wrote: “The British forces are second to none. The great and brave soldiers of the United Kingdom will always stand with the United States.”

He added: “In Afghanistan, 457 of them were killed and many severely wounded. They were among the greatest warriors, a bond too strong to ever be broken.”

Trump also held a call with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. A spokesperson for the British government said Starmer spoke of the courageous British and American soldiers who fought side by side in Afghanistan, many of whom never returned home, stressing that “their sacrifices must never be forgotten.”
