German Chancellor Friedrich Merz predicted the imminent collapse of Iran’s current leadership amid mass protests.
Speaking in Bengaluru, India, he said: “If a regime can only stay in power through force, it has already reached its end. We are witnessing the last days and weeks of this system.”
Merz stressed that Iran’s leadership lacks legitimacy and condemned the crackdown on peaceful protesters as “disproportionate” and “brutal.”
He noted ongoing talks with the U.S., UK, and France to ensure a peaceful transition to a democratic government in Iran.
Human rights organizations report that around 650 people have been killed in the protests.
