Moscow has strongly rejected European plans to deploy a multinational peacekeeping force in Ukraine, describing Kyiv and its European supporters as a “war axis.”
In her first statement following the Paris summit of Ukraine’s allies, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said on Thursday (January 8, 2026) that “all these units and facilities will be considered legitimate military targets for the Russian armed forces.”
European leaders and US envoys had earlier announced that security guarantees for Kyiv would include US-led monitoring mechanisms and a European multinational force to be deployed once a ceasefire is reached.
Russia has repeatedly warned it would not accept NATO peacekeepers in Ukraine and threatened that such forces could come under Russian fire. Zakharova said the “new military statements by the so-called coalition of the willing and the Kyiv regime together form a real war axis,” calling the plans “dangerous” and “destructive.”
