German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated after a meeting of Ukraine’s allies in Paris that Germany could take part militarily in securing a potential ceasefire in Ukraine.
He explained that this might involve stationing German forces on NATO territory in neighboring countries after a ceasefire is reached.
Merz added that the federal government and the Bundestag would decide the type and scope of Germany’s contribution once conditions are clarified, noting that deploying German soldiers inside Ukraine was not ruled out.
In a joint statement issued at the Paris summit, Western supporters pledged binding security guarantees to Ukraine for the first time.
European Council President António Costa said the EU was ready to commit to a system of politically and legally binding guarantees that would take effect once a ceasefire is agreed, potentially including military capabilities.
The United States pledged its support for the alliance and, according to the final declaration, will play a key role in monitoring the peace agreement.
