UK and Germany Urge Washington to Explain Actions in Venezuela

The United Kingdom and Germany have called on the United States to clarify its actions in Venezuela following Saturday’s U.S. strike on Caracas and the arrest of elected President Nicolás Maduro.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Monday that Washington must explain its conduct in Venezuela after Maduro’s detention, describing the situation as “unclear.”

Speaking at a press conference, Starmer stressed: “What Venezuela needs is a peaceful transition to democracy. That was our position before this week and remains our position now.”

He added: “International law is the framework by which we judge the actions of other governments. The United States must explain the measures it has taken. The situation is unclear, complex, and continues to evolve.”

The U.S. detained Maduro on Saturday and transferred him to New York to face drug trafficking charges.

Meanwhile, a German government spokesman said at a press briefing that Washington “must explain to the international community the basis on which the actions of recent days are judged. This has not yet happened.”
