Berlin power grid attack claimed by far-left group

Berlin police announced on Sunday, January 4, 2026, that they suspect a far-left group was behind an arson attack on the city’s power grid, which left tens of thousands of homes without electricity.

Early Saturday, several high-voltage cables caught fire on a bridge near a power station in southwest Berlin. Although the blaze was quickly extinguished, around 45,500 households and 2,200 businesses remained without power.

A group calling itself “Vulkangruppe” published a statement online claiming responsibility for what it described as a “successful sabotage operation.” The group said its aim was to reduce fossil fuel consumption, not to cause a blackout.

A police spokesperson told AFP that the claim was “likely authentic,” while investigations continue.

Berlin’s Interior Minister Iris Spranger condemned the attack, calling it “inhumane against the residents and visitors of the city.”
