Survey: Europe and Defense Top Germany’s Foreign Policy Priorities

A representative survey conducted by the Forsa Institute found that strengthening European cohesion remains the most important foreign policy task for the German government, with 54 percent of respondents supporting this priority. This is three points lower than in a similar poll conducted in February.

Increasing Germany’s defense capabilities ranked second at 37 percent (previously 38 percent). Limiting the influence of authoritarian states came third, rising from 20 percent to 28 percent.

Global climate protection dropped noticeably to fourth place, with 23 percent (previously 26 percent). Strengthening relations with the Global South, including India, Brazil, and African countries, remained nearly unchanged at 20 percent (previously 19 percent).

Support for Ukraine was the lowest priority, with only seven percent, compared to 17 percent in February.

The survey was based on interviews with 1,005 people conducted on December 3 and 4.
