European Anger Over US Move Seen as Attack on Digital Sovereignty

Publication date: 2025-12-24

The European Commission and EU officials on Wednesday strongly condemned US sanctions imposed on European activists fighting disinformation, calling the measure “repressive and intimidating” against Europe’s digital sovereignty.

The ban targeted former EU Commissioner Thierry Breton, who often clashed with tech giants such as Elon Musk over compliance with EU rules.

It also included Imran Ahmed of the Center for Countering Digital Hate, Anna-Lena von Hodenberg and Josephine Ballon of the German organization HateAid, and Clare Milford, head of the UK-based Global Disinformation Index.

The US State Department announced Tuesday that it would deny visas to the five activists, accusing them of trying to “force” American social media platforms to censor content they oppose.
