Germany Carries Out First Deportation of Syrian to Damascus Since 2011

Publication date: 2025-12-23

German authorities have deported a Syrian man to Damascus for the first time since the outbreak of the civil war in 2011. The Interior Ministry confirmed that the man, convicted of serious crimes including aggravated robbery, assault, and extortion, was flown to Syria and handed over to local authorities on Tuesday morning.

The deportation was made possible after Berlin reached an agreement with Damascus to allow regular removals of convicted criminals and security threats.

Human rights groups strongly criticized the move, warning of potential dangers for deportees in Syria.
