Following the expansion of border checks, more than 1,500 people applied for asylum in Germany after previously being denied entry, according to Interior Ministry data.
A government response to a parliamentary inquiry from the Green Party revealed that by October 31, 2025, a total of 1,582 asylum applications had been filed by individuals who had been turned back at the border since intensified controls began on May 7.
It remains unclear whether the applications were submitted during renewed attempts to enter near the border or after entering the country elsewhere. The Green Party criticized the measures as “costly and ineffective.”
