The German drama “Looking at the Sun” by director Masha Shelinski from Berlin has cleared a major hurdle on its way to the Academy Awards, reaching the shortlist of 15 contenders for Best International Feature at the 98th Oscars. The film follows four young women living on a farm across different eras, exploring themes of domestic violence, suppressed desires, and inherited trauma.
The critically acclaimed work won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in May and also made the preliminary list of 16 films in the Best Cinematography category, thanks to the outstanding work of Swiss cinematographer Fabian Gamper.
German film composers are also making strides in the Oscar race: Hans Zimmer reached the shortlist of 20 candidates in the Best Original Score category with his music for the racing film “F1.” Likewise, British composer Max Richter, born in Germany, was shortlisted for his score for Chloé Zhao’s drama “Hamnet.” Among the nominees is also Volker Bertelmann from Düsseldorf, who composed the score for Kathryn Bigelow’s thriller “House of Dynamite.”
