The German government announced it will not take in any additional asylum seekers in 2026 under the European solidarity mechanism, nor will it make financial contributions, citing the already high number of refugees hosted in Germany compared to other countries.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated after the EU interior ministers’ meeting in Brussels that Germany would invoke the exemption clause allowing heavily burdened states to opt out of relocation or payments.
The EU solidarity mechanism requires member states either to accept refugees from countries such as Italy and Greece or to pay €20,000 for each refugee they refuse to take. The agreement aims to redistribute around 21,000 asylum seekers across the EU to ease pressure on frontline states.
