Germany announced it will not take in any additional asylum seekers from other EU countries in 2026 under the European solidarity mechanism. The country also stated it will not provide financial contributions through this system.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) said on Monday (December 8, 2025) after the EU interior ministers’ meeting in Brussels that Germany already hosts a large number of asylum seekers who would otherwise fall under the responsibility of other member states.
The solidarity mechanism is part of an EU agreement allowing countries under heavy migration pressure, such as Italy or Greece, to relocate refugees to other EU states. Under this mechanism, Germany would normally either accept refugees or pay €20,000 for each refugee it refuses to take in.
