The German Bundestag has passed a new law restructuring military service, with 323 votes in favor, 272 against, and one abstention.
The plan introduces voluntary service lasting at least six months, with a monthly salary of no less than €2600. Additional incentives are offered for commitments of 12 months or longer.
Starting next year, all youths born in 2008 or later will receive a mandatory questionnaire about their willingness to serve. Responses are compulsory for men but optional for women.
The law also allows the Bundestag to reintroduce compulsory service in times of crisis. The Bundesrat is expected to review the law before Christmas.
