Israeli President to German Chancellor: “We Protect Europe”

Israeli President Isaac Herzog claimed on Saturday that Tel Aviv is protecting Germany and Europe, citing the confrontation with Iran and the deployment of Israeli missiles in Germany.

The statement came during his meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who is visiting Israel, according to Haaretz.

Addressing Merz, Herzog said: “We are facing the evil empire of Tehran, and therefore we are protecting Europe.”

Israel and Iran have long regarded each other as arch-enemies, exchanging accusations of sabotage and cyberattacks for years.

In June, Israel, with U.S. support, launched a 12-day air war against Iran, which responded with missile strikes before the United States announced a ceasefire between the two sides.

Herzog highlighted the deployment of Israeli Arrow-3 missiles in Germany, painted in blue and white, describing it as “unique, significant, and important” for the protection of Germany and Europe.

Last Wednesday, Israel delivered to Germany its first ballistic missile defense system to “protect Berlin from any future Russian threats,” according to the Israeli Broadcasting Authority.

Meanwhile, Maariv reported that Merz told Herzog Germany wants to strengthen its role in the “day after in Gaza,” referring to the future of the enclave after the war.

Merz also expressed hope that the situation in the West Bank would develop positively “so that we ultimately reach a two-state solution.”

He reaffirmed Germany’s support for Israel, saying: “We have deepened our friendship further and will always stand by Israel. We support Israel’s right to exist and will continue to provide assistance as the peace process and negotiations enter their next phase.”
