Steinmeier Urges Britons: Together for Europe’s Values

During his three-day official visit, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier called on the United Kingdom to join in defending Europe’s values and achievements. In a moving speech before the British Parliament at Westminster, he said: “We must stand together for what defines us. We defend democracy and freedom. We stand together as allies, partners, and friends.”

Steinmeier noted that Brexit in January 2020 had strained bilateral relations, but both sides decided not to remain stuck in that period. He highlighted the Kensington Treaty, signed in July between Berlin and London, as a foundation for renewed cooperation.

The President thanked the British people for the reconciliation achieved after 1945, describing Germany and the UK today as close allies. “After the devastating wars brought by Germans to Europe, this was not a given but a gift,” he said.

On the final day of his visit, Steinmeier traveled to Coventry, a city heavily damaged by German air raids during World War II, where thousands were killed or injured.
