The Master’s Oral Defense (Kolloquium)

Smart preparation, a strong presentation, and confident handling of questions

What is a Kolloquium?

It is an oral presentation and discussion of your thesis (Masterarbeit), conducted in front of a committee of professors in your field, and it represents an opportunity to demonstrate:

  • Your deep understanding of the research topic

  • Your ability to present it logically and convincingly

  • Your interaction with questions and academic criticism

Typical duration:
▪️ Presentation: 15–20 minutes
▪️ Discussion & questions: 10–30 minutes

Steps for successful preparation

  1. Understand your thesis in depth

  • Re-read your abstract, research question, methodology, and results

  • Prepare 3–5 main messages (Kernaussagen) to present

  1. Prepare the presentation (Präsentation)

  • Use PowerPoint or Prezi or PDF

  • Keep the design simple: title, research question, methodology, results, conclusion

  • Use supportive charts or images

  • Don’t write too much text — use keywords only

  1. Practice your delivery

  • In front of friends or in front of a mirror

  • Keep the timing precise

  • Pause at each slide to explain it simply

During the presentation – how to impress the committee

Start with a simple greeting:
„Guten Tag, mein Name ist …, ich freue mich, heute meine Masterarbeit zum Thema … vorzustellen.“

  • Keep your voice clear and confident

  • Don’t read from a script — speak freely

  • Respect the time — do not exceed the allotted duration

During the discussion – how to handle questions

Question type How do you respond?
Clarifying Answer calmly and clearly, and use examples from your research
Critical Don’t defend emotionally; acknowledge the limitation and show your awareness of it
Suggestive Thank the professor for the suggestion, and add that you have thought about it or will consider it in the future
You don’t know the answer? Say: „Das ist eine sehr interessante Frage, die ich gerne in einer zukünftigen Arbeit weiterverfolgen würde.“

How is it evaluated?
