Taxes when changing jobs (Jobwechsel)

Taxes when changing jobs in Germany (Steuern beim Jobwechsel)

1. Does changing jobs trigger extra taxes?

No. Changing jobs itself does not create a special new tax.
However, the amount of tax withheld from your salary each month can change, depending on:

  • your new income level

  • your tax class (Steuerklasse)

  • the time of year when you change jobs

  • any bonuses or commissions you receive

2. Tax issues to watch out for when changing jobs

1) Tax certificate from your previous employer (Lohnsteuerbescheinigung)

  • After your employment ends, you must receive your Lohnsteuerbescheinigung.

  • You will need this document later for your annual tax return (Steuererklärung).

2) Avoid double taxation in the same month

If you end your old job and start the new one in the same calendar month, it may look to the tax system as if:

  • you received two full salaries in one month,

  • your tax bracket for that month becomes higher,

  • and therefore too much income tax is temporarily withheld.

But:
This is usually corrected when you file your annual tax return, and you can get the overpaid tax refunded (Rückerstattung).

3) Higher income = higher tax rate?

Annual gross income Approximate tax rate
up to approx. €11,604 0 % (tax-free)
€15,000 – approx. €60,000 about 14–42 %
above €62,000 up to 45 %

A higher annual salary means:

  • higher monthly tax deductions,

  • but no “penalty tax” just because you changed jobs.

4) Updating your tax class (Steuerklasse)

If your personal situation changes around the time of the job change, for example:

  • marriage or divorce

  • having children

  • switching to a different tax class combination (e.g. III/V or IV/IV)

you must inform the Finanzamt, so your Steuerklasse is updated.
Your tax class has a direct impact on how much tax is withheld each month.

5) Do you have to file a tax return after changing jobs?

If you worked for more than one employer in the same year, an

  • income tax return (Steuererklärung) is often mandatory.

Practical example

  • You work 5 months in a job with a monthly gross salary of €2,000.

  • Then you switch to a new job with €3,000 gross for the remaining months.

At the end of the year:

  • The tax office adds up all income from both jobs as your annual gross income.

  • It calculates the actual annual tax you owe.

  • If the total tax withheld during the year is higher than necessary,
→ you will receive a tax refund (Rückerstattung).

Important steps after changing jobs

  • Collect your Lohnsteuerbescheinigung from your former employer and keep it safe.

  • Check whether your Steuerklasse is correct at the new employer.

  • File your annual tax return, in order to

    • avoid underpayment, or

    • claim any refund you are entitled to.
