1. What is the Deutschland-Stipendium?
The Deutschland-Stipendium is a public-private scholarship programme that supports high-achieving and socially engaged students with 300 € per month.
Funding is shared equally:
-
150 € from the federal government, and
-
150 € from private sponsors, such as companies, foundations or private individuals (fau.eu).
2. How long does the funding last? Is it renewed automatically?
-
The scholarship is granted for at least two semesters.
-
It can be renewed annually up to the end of the standard period of study (Regelstudienzeit).
-
Each year, the university reassesses whether the student still meets the criteria (academic performance, engagement, study progress).
-
If the requirements are still fulfilled, funding can continue into the next academic year.
3. Who is eligible? – Main criteria
Typical beneficiaries are:
-
Academically excellent students
– usually with a grade point average around 2.0 or better (each university sets its own threshold). -
Students with strong social or civic engagement
– e.g. volunteering, student initiatives, committee work, or overcoming difficult life circumstances. -
No income test
– the scholarship is not means-tested, so parental or personal income does not matter. -
No impact on BAföG
– the Deutschland-Stipendium is not counted against BAföG, so both can be received at the same time. -
In most universities, PhD candidates are not eligible, the programme is aimed primarily at Bachelor’s and Master’s students within the standard period of study.
4. How to apply
-
Applications always run via the respective university, usually once a year, often for the winter term.
-
Typical periods (vary between years):
-
TH Köln: roughly August–September
-
University of Mannheim: roughly April–June
-
TUM: application phase in summer for the current high-school graduates
-
-
You normally apply online and submit:
-
CV
-
Transcript of records / current grades
-
Motivation letter, possibly recommendation letters
-
Proof of social engagement or special personal circumstances
-
Exact requirements are defined in each university’s call for applications.
5. What makes this programme special?
-
No income barrier – selection is based on talent and commitment, not on financial background.
-
Public-private co-funding – companies and foundations can support talented students and build early contacts with potential employees.
-
More than money – in many cases you gain access to:
-
Networking events and meetings with sponsors
-
Workshops, excursions and mentoring
-
Insights into companies and future career opportunities
-
