What to Do If Your Child Gets Injured During Training at a Sports Club
First: Don’t worry — your child is automatically covered by the club’s sports accident insurance (Sportversicherung). This insurance is provided through the regional sports association or the statutory accident insurer (VBG) and covers injuries during training, matches, and in many cases, the journey to and from training (lsb-niedersachsen.de).
Immediate Steps to Take
1. First Aid
Provide basic first aid using the PECH method (Pause, Ice, Compression, Elevation) and visit a doctor as soon as possible.
2. Inform the Club Immediately
Notify the coach or club official right away, even if the injury seems minor.
Delays may jeopardize insurance coverage.
3. Fill Out an Accident Report
The club provides the Unfallmeldung form.
Parents must sign it and return it to the club for submission to ARAG or the BG.
4. The Club Reports the Injury
Depending on the insurance:
-
The report goes to ARAG / the regional sports association, or
-
To the VBG
Clubs must usually report within three days.
Some injuries involving equipment or helpers also require a VBG report.
5. Visit a “Durchgangsarzt” (D-Arzt)
For injuries requiring follow-up treatment, your doctor will refer your child to a certified accident insurance doctor. This doctor coordinates the entire treatment under BG coverage.
What Does the Insurance Cover?
| Coverage | Includes |
|---|---|
| Medical treatment | Doctor visits, medication, physiotherapy, hospital care, rehabilitation |
| Psychological support | For severe or traumatic injuries |
| Compensation | For temporary or permanent disability |
| Travel to/from training | Often covered if on the official route |
Note: Sports insurance does not cover private equipment damage or injuries outside official training.
If You Fail to Report the Injury

Late or missing reports may result in loss of insurance benefits.
