German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that the German army will not participate in protecting oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, sharply criticizing U.S. President Donald Trump’s approach.

Merz, speaking in Berlin alongside Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten, stressed that NATO is “a defensive alliance, not an offensive one,” warning against a “permanent war” with unclear objectives.

Foreign Minister Johann Fadevol and Defense Minister Boris Pistorius voiced similar positions. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said this was never meant to be a NATO mission, while Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles confirmed her government would not participate, calling instead for an end to the war.
