German philosopher and sociologist Jürgen Habermas has died at the age of 96 in Starnberg, according to publisher Suhrkamp. Habermas was a leading figure of the Frankfurt School, known for his theories of communicative action and the public sphere. He played a central role in Europe’s intellectual debates after World War II and left behind more than fifty works, including The Theory of Communicative Action and The Philosophical Discourse of Modernity.
