After Assad’s Fall: Asylum Applications in Europe Decline – Germany Remains Top Destination

Data from 2025 shows asylum applications in Europe fell by about 20% compared to 2024, following the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad at the end of last year.

  • Total applications: around 822,000 across the EU, Norway, and Switzerland.

  • Syrian applications dropped from 151,000 (2024) to just 42,000 (2025).

  • Despite the decline, Germany remains the leading destination for asylum seekers.

  • The EU Asylum Agency warned that the crisis in Iran could trigger an unprecedented new wave of refugees.
