Germany: Counterfeit Money Circulation Declined in 2025

Publication date: 2026-02-28

The German central bank (Bundesbank) reported a decrease in counterfeit money circulation in 2025 compared to the previous year.

  • About 68,000 fake euro banknotes were detected, down 6% from 2024.

  • Counterfeit coins dropped by 9% to around 128,000 pieces.

  • Estimated financial losses fell from €4.5 million to roughly €4 million.

  • Bundesbank expert Sven Bertlmann attributed the decline to successful police investigations and the fact that counterfeiters are now focusing on smaller denominations, mainly €50 notes, instead of €100 or €200.
