Zelensky Awards German Foreign Minister Second-Class Ukrainian Order

 

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky awarded German Foreign Minister Johann Fadevoll (CDU) the Order of Merit, second class, in recognition of Germany’s “continuous support for Ukraine.” The award raised protocol questions, since the statute usually grants first-class honors to ministers of sovereign states. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius had received the first-class Order of Merit in 2024, prompting speculation about why Fadevoll was given the second class.
