Germany to rely on Morocco for 5% of electricity consumption

Publication date: 2026-02-20

The German government has officially backed the “Sila Atlantik” project, which will transfer renewable energy from Morocco to Germany via a 4,800 km undersea cable.

Morocco will host solar and wind power plants with a total capacity of 15 GW, enabling exports of about 26 TWh annually, equivalent to 5% of Germany’s electricity consumption.

The cable will pass through Portugal, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands before reaching Germany, supported by battery storage systems providing over 20 hours of clean electricity daily.

Investment costs are estimated at €30–40 billion, making it one of Europe’s largest renewable energy projects. Major German companies such as E.ON, Uniper, and Deutsche Bahn are involved.
