Germany: Berlin apartment tower fire – mother and child die after injuries, baby had already passed away

The death toll from the fire in an apartment tower in eastern Berlin has risen to three, after a 26-year-old mother and her five-year-old son succumbed to severe injuries, following the earlier death of her nine-month-old baby.

  • The baby died Wednesday evening after the fire broke out in an apartment in Friedrichsfelde, Lichtenberg district.

  • The mother died Saturday in hospital, her older son Friday despite intensive treatment.

  • Firefighters found them unconscious in the third-floor corridor.

  • The blaze spread quickly due to excessive clutter inside the apartment.

  • About 170 firefighters took part, evacuating 70 residents.

  • Eight people were hospitalized, four suspected of smoke inhalation.

  • Four apartments remain uninhabitable; temporary housing was provided.
