German Foreign Minister Johann Fadevol continued his two-day African tour with a visit to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he met his counterpart Gideon Timotheos and representatives of the African Union, including Commission President Mahmoud Ali Youssouf.
Central to the discussions is the war in Sudan, ongoing since April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, which the United Nations has described as the world’s largest humanitarian crisis at present.
The African Union, under its Agenda 2063, pursues key goals such as peace, security, development, democratic transformation, and human rights protection. It has the right to intervene in cases of serious crimes such as war crimes or genocide. The AU includes 54 African states plus Western Sahara, was founded in 2002, and has been a full member of the G20 since September 2023.
