Caritas has called on German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to make the humanitarian catastrophe in Syria the central topic of his meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal al-Sharaa.
The organization stressed that the humanitarian situation in Syria remains dire, with millions of people dependent on international aid. Caritas also warned against discussing the return of Syrian refugees while security and humanitarian conditions are not guaranteed.
According to Caritas, Germany must assume responsibility by prioritizing support and protection rather than raising the issue of forced returns.
