Merz: Washington Turning Its Back on Rule-Based System

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that the United States, Germany’s most important ally, is increasingly turning away from the international rule-based order.

Speaking at a CDU event in Heidesheim, Baden-Württemberg, Merz urged Europe to strengthen its independence from the US, criticizing American policy as driven by power and self-interest rather than international law.

He stressed that Germany must learn to defend its own interests to gain respect, and called on citizens to work longer and harder to safeguard the foundations of industry.

His remarks coincided with President Donald Trump’s statements about annexing Greenland, a move opposed by European nations. Germany recently announced plans to send troops to multinational reconnaissance missions in Greenland.
