In 2026, Germany will for the first time hold the title of “World Design Capital,” awarded to Frankfurt and the Rhine-Main region. The opening ceremony takes place today in Darmstadt.
The World Design Organization, based in Montréal, Canada, has awarded this title since 2008 to cities and regions that effectively use design to benefit society and democracy. Frankfurt prevailed over Riyadh in the competition.
The year’s motto is “Design for Democracy. Atmospheres for a Better Life,” with about 2,000 projects and events planned in cooperation with 450 partners.
