Germany Debates Ban on Radar Warning Apps – Bundesrat Raises Alarm

Publication date: 2026-01-16

Germany’s Bundesrat has sparked debate by proposing a full ban on radar warning apps (Blitzer-Apps), which alert drivers to speed cameras and radar traps.

Currently, using such apps while driving is prohibited, but owning them is allowed. The new proposal seeks to outlaw their installation and possession in vehicles altogether.

Supporters argue the ban is necessary to improve road safety, while critics warn of negative consequences and infringements on individual rights. The federal government has expressed reservations, saying existing laws are sufficient.
