German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated that NATO members are considering strengthening joint protection of the Arctic region around Greenland.
During a meeting in Berlin with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, Pistorius said: “It is about surveillance and patrols, monitoring underwater, on the surface, and in the air. It is also about reconnaissance and regular exercises on the ground to demonstrate our presence.”
He noted that it is too early to discuss concrete steps such as a joint NATO mission, but stressed that security in the North Atlantic and Arctic can only be achieved through multilateral cooperation.
This comes amid repeated claims by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Greenland, citing security concerns.
