Imams in the German Army – A Historic Step Toward Religious Diversity

Publication date: 2026-01-14

The German Army has decided to appoint Muslim chaplains (imams) for the first time. The pilot project will begin in early 2026, initially limited to Germany. It aims to provide spiritual support to about 3,000 Muslim soldiers serving in the Bundeswehr.

Currently, the army employs more than 100 Protestant pastors, around 80 Catholic priests, and since 2021, 9 rabbis serving approximately 300 Jewish soldiers. It remains under discussion whether imams will be recruited through Islamic associations or directly by the military.
