EU: Sharp Decline in Asylum Applications in 2025

Publication date: 2026-01-11

Preliminary data shows about 780,200 asylum applications were filed in the EU’s 27 member states plus Norway and Switzerland between January and mid-December 2025. This marks a 20% drop compared to 2024. The decline is mainly attributed to fewer applications from Syrians following the fall of Bashar al-Assad in late 2024, as well as stricter EU asylum and migration rules.
