A notice published in a local newspaper in Schmalkalden, Thuringia, reported the loss of five Iraqi passports in the Meiningen area.
The announcement, which appeared at the end of September, sparked debate as further checks revealed that all the passports had already expired, some for several years.
It was also noted that the documents belonged to individuals sharing the same family name. However, the identity of the party that placed the notice and the reasons for reporting the loss of invalid documents remain unclear.
