Authorities confirmed that many people were injured, some seriously. Highways and rural roads were particularly affected, with vehicles skidding and colliding.
Police urged drivers to reduce speed and avoid unnecessary travel. Public transport also faced delays and cancellations.
Weather experts warned that frost and icy conditions are expected to persist for several more days.
