Germany has started the new year by deporting the first Afghan national to Kabul, marking a new phase in its deportation policy.
According to media reports, the man had been convicted in Bavaria of serious crimes including assault and drug trafficking. After serving part of his sentence, authorities decided to deport him.
The deportation was carried out via a civilian flight from Frankfurt through Istanbul to Kabul, where the German Federal Police handed him over to Taliban representatives.
This move is the first direct deportation to Afghanistan in years, following the suspension of such operations after the Taliban takeover in 2021. Human rights groups warn of the dangers of returning refugees to Afghanistan, while supporters argue it is a necessary security measure.
