Germany: Health insurance contributions exceed critical threshold with new increases

Publication date: 2026-01-02

At the start of 2026, Germany saw a sharp rise in health insurance contributions, surpassing the critical 3% mark for the first time.

Official data show that the average additional contribution rose from 2.94% last year to 3.13% this year, bringing the total rate to around 17.73% of taxable income.

This increase directly reduces net salaries for millions of insured individuals. Dozens of health insurance funds announced higher contributions, citing mounting financial pressures and rising healthcare costs.

The government stressed that contribution rates are set by the funds themselves, not through direct political decisions.
