Publication date: 2026-01-02

In his first New Year’s address as Chancellor, Friedrich Merz declared that Germany is “neither a victim of external circumstances nor a tool in the hands of major powers.” He expressed hope that 2026 would mark a “new beginning” despite rising international tensions.

Merz stressed that Europe must significantly enhance its deterrence capabilities to ensure long-term security. While Germany remains a safe country, he warned that this stability can only be preserved through decisive action.

He added that the government’s mission is to “renew the foundations of freedom, security, and prosperity” for the coming years and decades, emphasizing that European peace can only be safeguarded through strength and freedom.
