In 2025, Sophia reclaimed the top spot among girls’ names in Germany, ending Emilia’s dominance since 2022. For boys, Noah maintained his position as the most popular name.
A recent ranking published by northern German naming expert Knud Bielefeld showed limited changes overall. Parents continue to favor traditional names, though some are increasingly searching for distinctive options.
The leading names were: Girls – Sophia first, followed by Emma and Emilia. Boys – Noah first, then Mateo and Elias. Notably, Leo entered the boys’ top ten list for the first time.
Bielefeld noted that the stability of the rankings remains striking, despite repeated attempts to break away from convention.
