Insurance Companies Warn: Climate Volatility Costs Germany €2.6 Billion in 2025

Publication date: 2026-01-01

Germany’s insurers reported that natural hazard losses in 2025 amounted to around €2.6 billion, nearly €3 billion less than in 2024.

According to the German Insurance Association (GDV), CEO Joerg Asmussen cautioned that the decline was “partly a matter of luck” and should not be seen as a trend. Extreme weather events linked to climate change remain a long-term threat.

Damages included heavy rainfall, floods, storms, and hail. Insurers are calling for stronger prevention and protection measures to mitigate future risks.
